Microblading explained: procedure, opinions, after-care
Microblading is made for people who wish to correct the shape, thickness and appearance of their brows permanently. It has become a thing because today’s permanent makeup techniques may give brows a really natural look, and that’s why women with too few brows often go for this form of enhancement. Check what microblading procedure consists of and what you should expect.
What is semi-permanent brow makeup actually?
This type of makeup stays with you for long years and it’s more like a tattoo because pigment gets inside the skin and stays there permanently. The procedure also resembles tattooing.
Microblading is an alternative for people whose brows aren’t flawless, looking fake after applying brow makeup. It often acts as a remedy for sparse, uneven or patchy brows. Semi-permanent makeup fills in gaps on brow arches and makes them look on fleek.
It is also popular among people who don’t want to fill in the brows every single day or haven’t got enough time to do that. Long-wearability is its unquestioned benefit. Properly performed treatment lasts for two years or more, plus microbladed brows look great regardless of time of the day.
Semi-permanent brows: procedure
As you’ve already learnt the procedure resembles tattooing since the pigment is introduced under the skin with a thin needle.
This professional treatment has to be done by a qualified brow esthetician. It is invasive and requires, first of all, skill and, second of all, rigorous hygiene practices to prevent infections.
Semi-permanent brows step by step
- Interview: the brow expert asks about your expectations and tells you about the possible outcome, answers all questions, talks through health issues.
- Agreement: you sign an agreement and fill in a questionnaire to assess your health condition and decide whether you are allowed to undergo the procedure.
Note!
Contraindications to microblading include, among others, pregnancy, breastfeeding, viral, fungal or bacterial infections, diabetes, cancer, taking some medication eg. steroids and blood-thinning medication. Alcohol is forbidden as well.
- Applying anesthetic to the brow area – lidocaine cream. Takes more or less 20 minutes.
- Drawing a new brow shape precisely. The esthetician marks out the most flattering shape for you and draws the contours with a specially-designed pencil or a thread soaked in mascara.
- The choice of pigment: it should be either the same as your brow color or slightly darker for bolder definition. It shouldn’t be too dark because after the procedure it is impossible to make the color lighter (it can be only made darker).
- Proper procedure: the esthetician uses a tool looking like metal pen to make micro cuts imitating real hairs. Other technique: thin, sterile threads are used for shading and creating the perfect shape of brows. Next, the cuts or punctures are filled in with pigment. Done!
How long does the procedure take?
Time of microblading depends on a couple of factors such as esthetician’s experience and nature of your brows. The whole appointment usually takes an hour while the proper procedure – approx. 30 minutes.
How long do microbladed brows take to heal?
You need to wait quite a while. Because the procedure is invasive, you will surely experience redness in the brow area for around 2 days. Of course, it depends on the individual “character” of your skin. Generally, you look fine and can go out pretty fast.
After 2 days or so, scabs start appearing whereas the skin peels off. Brow hair feels stiff.
The healing process lasts 3-4 weeks and usually this is the very moment when you can have touch-ups done.
Note!
Semi-permanent brows mostly require touch-ups. They are aimed at perfecting the shape, filling in the patches, intensifying the color, etc. They are done no earlier than 4 weeks of the procedure and are usually included in the price.
